Maximum Mpesa balance: send mobile money abroad

If you’re thinking about using Mpesa to transfer mobile money to your family or friends but are lost between all the information you find on the Internet, then this article is for you. In here, you will find everything you need to know about the service in general, how to use mobile money and a focus on the maximum Mpesa balance. We hope you’ll find it useful!

Mpesa: service presentation

Mpesa is a mobile money transfer service, founded in 2007 as a joint venture between the Vodafone Group and Safaricom, two of the largest mobile operators in the world. The service was first launched in Kenya and today it exists in more than 10 countries in Africa and the Middle East. Mpesa used to be present in India, Romania and Albania, however, the service was terminated due to low market uptake.

Mpesa comes as a solution in the countries in which the banking system is underdeveloped or too expensive. It also facilitates sending and receiving money from abroad, without having to pass through one of the more traditional services such as Western Union or MoneyGram.

Mpesa is a widely used service in the developing countries, counting more than 50 millions subscribers in 2021.

In the sections below we’ll explain how the system works and what is the maximum Mpesa balance.

Mpesa mobile money: how does it work?

Mpesa is a mobile money service, which means subscribers can make transactions using only their mobile device.

Here is the list of transactions you can do using Mpesa:

  • deposit and withdraw money
  • pay bills (such as utilities, phone subscriptions, internet etc.)
  • transfer and receive money
  • top-up your mobile
  • create virtual accounts for your savings
  • make loans (available only in some countries)

As any money transfer service, Mpesa charges a commission for every transaction. The service also makes a profit from exchange rates, when transfers are made in different currencies. Nonetheless, the fees are rather low which is the company’s competitive advantage.

Mobile money can be withdrawn from an Mpesa wallet. However, most of the countries have adapted quickly to this rather new way of payment and have facilitated its use. To make purchases using mobile money all you have to do is scan a QR code and input your PIN and the sum is directly withdrawn from your mobile wallet.

Mpesa account: manage and check your balance

The easiest way to manage and check your Mpesa balance is by using the Safaricom mobile app.

If you want to know how much space you have left on your wallet until you reach the maximum Mpesa balance, first, log into your Safaricom App account, input your pin number and select “Show Balance”. You will be able to see your Mpesa balance right away.

You can also use SMS to check your balance. Select check balance on the Mpesa menu in your Safaricom sim tool kit. Then, all you have to do is enter your pin and wait for the text showing you your balance. Easy, right?

What is the maximum Mpesa balance?

It is important to point out that there is a maximum Mpesa balance you can have at all times. Your mobile wallet can only hold a certain amount of money at the time. You can check your Mpesa balance from your account at any time, like explained in the section above.

In Kenya, the maximum Mpesa balance is Khs 300,000 (kenyan shillings), which roughly equals £2000.

Nonetheless, it is important to point out that a maximum of Khs 70,000, equaling ÂŁ460, can be sent per transaction. Therefore, if you want to reach the maximum amount to send via Mpesa, more than 4 transactions are needed. This also means that each transaction will have its own fees to take into account.
