Mobile money Uganda: how it works

In Uganda by June 2011, the mobile phone subscription had reached 14 million. 

Mobile money transfer is possible anytime. You can send and receive money 24h/7. If you want to send mobile money to Uganda, make sure to follow these steps:

  1. Ask for the receiver’s account number. It is generally their phone number.
  2. Ask for their operator mobile money service. To send mobile money to Uganda, there’s services like Airtel, MTN, M-Pesa etc.
  3. Send money and pay
  4. The receiver gets the money directly in their mobile account. They are notified in their phone once the money is received.

Send mobile money on an Airtel wallet

To send mobile money to Uganda via Airtel, you need to check if you are an Airtel consumer. Creating an Airtel needs this condition. In addition to this, you need to have an ID card or ID paper. To create your Airtel account, you need a smartphone or a computer to use the Airtel mobile money app or join the website on the internet.

Here are the steps to follow :

  1. Open your Airtel app on your smartphone (you can also go to the website)
  2. Inform your mobile number
  3. Choose the ID proof you want to use in order to identify
  4. Enter the ID document regarding the one you chose
  5. Verify OTP (Airtel Uganda mobile money code)

Your Airtel wallet was created! You’ll now be able to send and receive mobile money to Uganda, following the instructions. You can do this both on the app or the website and you can even pay your bills via your Airtel wallet.

Send mobile money on a MTN wallet

You can of course send MTN mobile money if you’d like. The operators gives you two options:

  1. You can go to an MTN MoMo customer corner with a valid ID (National ID card, driving licence, passport) and a registered MTN SIM card.
  2. You can also open your MTN MoMo account yourself from your phone:
  • Log on to MTN Mobile Money official website.
  • Click on “Register”.
  • Enter your username which is your phone number and preferred Mobile Money Pin.
  • Enter the captcha displayed. You’ll receive a one-time password to your phone.
  • Enter the one-time password.
  • Create your own password or keep the one generated for you.
  • Click on “Continue”.
