Telefonica O2 plc (known as O2 or before March 2005 as mmO2) is a British telecommunications company specializing in mobile telephony, originally part of the BT Group and owned since 2005 by the Spanish operator TelefĂłnica. The firm is headquartered in Slough, with major offices in Bury, Glasgow, Leeds, and Preston Brook.

Launched in 1985 as Cellnet, O2's UK operations were a joint venture between BT Group (60%) and Securicor (40%). In 1993, Cellnet launched GSM services, and in 1999, Securicor sold its shares in O2 to BT: O2 was renamed BT Cellnet. BT Cellnet was integrated into BT Mobile.

O2 was created when BT separated from its cell phone business. The BT Cellnet brand was renamed O2, the chemical symbol for oxygen.

In May 2020, TelefĂłnica and Liberty Global announced the merger of O2 and Virgin Media in the United Kingdom in a deal valuing the combined entity at nearly $38 billion, including debt. Both companies will have a 50% stake in the combined entity.

O2 is operating in three countries:

  • United Kingdom: Telefonica O2 had a market share of 26% in 20099.
  • Germany: O2 had a 13.5% market share in June 200910.
  • Spain: O2 is TelefĂłnica's low-cost secondary brand under the Movistar umbrella, launched on June 20, 2018

O2 offers several services such as O2 packages and prepaid card, credit or data top up.

O2 coverage

O2 benefits from a very good coverage across countries in which it operates. Furthermore, O2 provides a coverage checker in the form of a map and gives detail on whether the network is good inside, outside, both or if there’s no signal in some areas. You can consult it on O2 website!

If you have a signal problem, you can use the O2 network status checker to see if there’s a known network connection problem in your area, or to report an unknown issue to us. From here, you’ll be able to subscribe to updates using Keep Me Posted.

If there’s no known issue, try manually resetting your device by:

  • Turning your phone off and on
  • Making sure mobile data is turned on in your settings
  • Choosing the O2 network manually in your settings
  • Resetting your network settings (this will also reset Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, VPN and APN settings that you’ve used before)

O2 coverage also now provides 5G in parts of most major UK towns and cities, as well as lots of smaller towns and villages.
